Philippopolis

City in northern Thrace (q.v.) situated on the highway from Belgrade to Constantinople (qq.v.). Its strategic location meant that it was occasionally subject to hostile attack by Pechenegs, Crusaders, and especially Bulgarians (qq.v.), whose border with Byzantium (q.v.) was near Philippopolis. Basil II (q.v.) stopped at the city on his way back to Constantinople after campaigning against Samuel (qq.v.) in 1004. During the Third Crusade (q.v.) it was occupied briefly by Frederick I (q.v.). The Ottomans (q.v.) captured it in 1363, making it their capital of Rumeli (q.v.), before moving the capital to Adrianople (q.v.).
